Camera Modes

I read an article on different camera modes. Here are explanations for them:

Automatic Modes

  • Automatic Mode tells your camera to use it’s best judgement to select shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. to take the best shot it can.
  • Portrait Mode will automatically select a large aperture which helps to keep your background  out of focus ensuring your subject is the center of attention.
  • Macro Mode lets you move closer to your subject to take a close up shot.
  • Landscape Mode is the opposite of portrait mode. It makes your aperture smaller to make sure almost all of the scene is focus.
  • Sports Mode is ideal for photographing any fast-moving objects.
  • Night Mode is for shooting in low light situations and sets your camera to use a longer shutter speed to help capture details of the background. It also fires a flash to light the foreground.
  • Movie Mode records video and sound.

Less Common Modes

  • Stitch Mode is for taking shots of a panoramic scene to be joined together later as one.
  • Snow Mode helps with tricky bright lighting at the snow.
  • Fireworks Mode is for shooting firework displays.
  • Kids and Pets Mode speeds up shutter speed and help reduce shutter lag.
  • Underwater Mode helps with how being underwater has its own requirements for exposure.
  • Beach Mode is another bright scene mode.
  • Indoor Mode helps with setting shutter speed and white balance.
  • Foliage Mode boosts saturation to give nice bold colors.

Semi Automatic Modes

  • Aperture Priority Mode (A or AV) is a semi-manual mode where you only choose the aperture and your camera chooses the rest.
  • Shutter Priority Mode (S or TV) is similar to AV except you can only choose the shutter speed while the camera chooses everything else.
  • Program Mode (P) is similar to Auto except it gives you a little more control over some other feature including flash, white balance, ISO etc.

Fully Manual Mode

  • Manual Mode is where you have full control over your camera. You need to think about all the settings.

Overall, a nice article. I found the less common modes the most interesting. Those specific modes look interesting especially Foliage Mode. I’d like to try that one out.
